The JICT Images Story
Read the Newfield News Voices spotlight on the JICT Images Story!
It all began in 2007 when 4 professional coaches began to explore how they might work together to create some kind of product that would serve anyone who facilitates groups of people. They discussed how sometimes each of them and/or one of their clients had experienced some difficulty in getting a group to get to “the heart of the matter” and getting beyond just what is felt and said from the head. These difficulties might happen when desiring people to connect with others in the group so they can function better as a team, when planning a course of action for a new opportunity, or even when tackling a challenge a group is facing,
These four coaches represented diverse communities across the U.S. and Europe and they wanted something that would work with any group, anywhere. Jane Kerschner (east coast U.S.), Irene Kelly (midwest U.S.), Carol Harris-Fike (western U.S.), and Tom Hatton (Europe) had studied ontological coaching in a program called: “Leadership & Coaching: Increasing Results through Powerful Conversations”, designed by Newfield Network and sponsored by Villanova University in 2005. Ontological coaches understand the connection of all of who we are as human beings… body, emotion, and language, and how that connects us with ourselves and with others. This understanding leads to the use of questions and practices that involve getting in touch with all parts of one’s self. So, most conversations among ontological coaches, with each other or with their clients, involve all three domains. In the case of Jane, Irene, Carol, and Tom, meetings always began with a check-in and maybe a little laser coaching, if requested. Often the use of a metaphor was helpful in describing the emotions or thoughts around some situation and in stating an intention or planning for actions. Knowing the power of metaphor, these coaches focused on creating a tool employing the use of metaphor that would more quickly lead people to deeper emotions and thoughts and, thus, fresh ideas for accomplishing goals.
One day at one of their regular meetings, Jane mentioned that her husband was launching a new career as a professional photographer. She even shared some of his photos via an Internet slideshow. Serendipitously, they realized what great metaphors images could be. They began to play with this idea for their product creation. Chaz submitted a bank of photos from his portfolio and they began selecting ones that provided a balanced variety of pictures of people, nature, objects, and urban and rural scenes. Carol offered a few of her photos taken in settings around the world to complete the set of 72 images. Next, they spent hours adding thought provoking questions to each image and even created a set of generic questions that could be used with any image. Their creative business venture took over two years and hundreds of bridge line calls to grow from great idea to the real deal!
When they were ready to begin testing their use and exploring ways that they might be supportive to any group or individual each of the coaches used every opportunity to include them in their work and even with families and friends. They used them at seminars, conferences, board meetings, high school classrooms, and with individual clients. Time after time they experienced amazing… even magical results. The photos spoke to the hearts of people and immediately led them to new ideas, deep emotions, and even surprising answers to difficult questions. They also began to see how much such a photo meant to some people, as they noticed pictures missing from the set at the end of a session!!?? The name came from this exploration: JICT Images: Journey with Intuition & Creativity to Transformation. The metaphor created by connecting with the images begins the journey igniting intuition that allows creativity in transforming how one feels and the choice of actions one sees as possibilities. And, yes, JICT… Jane, Irene, Carol, and Tom are the creators.
A brief manual was created to share some of the ways the images can be used with groups and with individuals. The JICT group wanted to offer a springboard for getting started, with an awareness that everyone would discover many ways that the image set would serve those with whom each of them work and play.
They understand coaches, facilitators, team leaders, managers, and educators may desire to have duplicate sets of the images.
