Rickety Observation

Another educator shared that his initial reaction to this image was to see the beauty of the landscape, the flow of the stream, the colors of the trees. With further observation, he noticed the cabin and steps looking rickety and uncertain. This was a reminder that he encounters some students who are solid and others who are rickety; he will remember that all have unique ability and that he wants to nurture that in ALL students.

Reflection

An educator asked to share how this image reflected how coaching skills would change how she teaches, responded that the image would be a reminder to be open to ALL students and what they bring to her classroom. She wants to constantly remember that she is the facilitator of learning and that being open will allow her offer her best self each day.

Hot Summer Memories

On the Journey...

How does this JICT image make you feel?

This raft is crashing down a level 5 rapid down the Colorado River.

Can you imagine shivering as the icy cold water drenches you and takes your breath away?

This helps me feel cool in the midst of the heat wave that is blanketing the country.

Does it bring you some relief? What memories of summers past does it evoke for you?

Jagged Rocks

User's Intuition...

Funny, I usually think about taking a step back to see a wider view of a situation. And often we are asked in workshops to look from the 5,000 foot view so that we can extricate ourselves from a difficult situation enough to be more objective. But this image asks how to imagine what is beyond the jagged rocks so we can see our challenge more broadly, as if we could push away the rocks on either side to see a wider view of the world.

What comes to your mind with this question?

No Way Out

Ever been in the middle of something where you saw no way out? Could you allow yourself to just “be in the question?” Sometimes we rush so quickly to solve the problem that we don’t realize that relaxing into it could both lower our stress and allow an answer… maybe more than one answer to come to us naturally… simply. Uhmmm, where could I apply that thought right now?

Prickly

Another educator when asked how this image reflected how coaching would influence his work differently, responded that it was a reminder that in every prickly situation there is beauty … in a prickly student (or parent) there is beauty. His desire is to focus on the beauty rather than the prickly!

Bleak

An educator shared that this image had no message for her and how coaching would impact teaching differently. She acknowledged that the bars said “bleak” and what was outside was also “bleak”. Using the image question, “what is blocking you from living your fullest?”, she realized that she lacked sleep, was tired at the time so was only able to see “bleak”. She made a commitment to take care & get the rest she needed. Rejuvenation would likely change her view.

Different Responses

In a graduate course, my colleague teaches coaching skills to educators at a local university. She invited me share my coaching expertise with the group as a guest speaker. I asked each person to blindly choose an image, reflect and respond to this question: “How does this image reflect how you will do your work (in education) differently now that you have an awareness of and have begun to build your coaching skills?”

One person had chosen this image and shared that this reminded her that she wants to be aware that each student has unique “bars” that can interfere with learning. She will support students to identify the “bars” that get in the way and assist them to remove them.

Notice the same image evoked very different responses from different people about different topics … an image speaks to each person differently, to the same person differently at a different time and in a different setting.

What does this image say to you at this very moment?

Unique Creativity

An educator in a graduate coaching program, asked how this image reflected how coaching would influence his work differently, responded that it was a reminder to him that each student brings unique creativity to the table and that he will strive to intentionally nurture that creativity in each student.

Dark Side

Transformational Testimonial...

A coaching client chose this image because it helped her see how the dark side, where she had been hanging out for quite some time, was actually a natural and necessary place in the moon’s recurring cycle of waxing and waning. Words had not been able to give her this ‘aha’ about her current situation, but in about 20 seconds, this image shifted her perception so that she was able to accept and appreciate the darkness and also see the light.

Movement

Image This...

How are you moved when you see this?

As you look closely at this image your eye is likely drawn to the eagles in the nest.

Do you find yourself feeling trapped high up in the air with nowhere to go? Or do you feel like you are free to launch in any direction, freely flying wherever you want to go?

You may feel contracted and trapped, afraid to venture forth or eager to take the next step into the unknown.

What is your first inclination to move back and in or up and forward into the deep blue sky?

If you are one for whom this image generates tension in your belly, take a deep breath and imagine leaving the nest with a sense of adventure and wonder.

Debriefing in the Moment

Creativity In Action...

The JICT images are an amazing tool to use to give voice to strong emotions that, if ignored, could prevent a group from moving forward. Participants in a class that I taught this summer had just attended a lecture give by a very famous opera singer who was a major force in the civil rights movement. After about 3 minutes into her hour-long speech, it was obvious that she was losing her cognitive capacity. While many in the audience left, all of my students stayed for this heartbreaking experience. Rather than using my planned beginning, I decided to ask each participant to chose an image to capture how they were feeling. Several of the participants chose this image and described the dried seaweed as the brittle and broken neural pathways in her brain that no longer allowed this amazing women tell us her stories.

Using the images images allowed us to process the experience together, brought us closer together, and enhanced our learning. The ability to be flexible and sensitive in the moment as we work with groups adds real value to our work with others and the images are the perfect medium to encourage the release of strong emotions.

Our Journey

Here is a very enthusiastic group of new image users who attended a class I, Jane Kerschner, taught in Chautauqua, NY entitled, “ Exploring Image with Groups: A Window into the Soul”. We used the images to get to know each other, to discover more about our own selves, and to find very practical ways to use them in the work that each does in the world. Participants left with confidence that they had an engaging tool that would enhance their work in the classroom, the church search committee, the college sorority, the family reunion, and the medical conference.

My colleagues and I offer consulting and workshops to help others build their expertise in using images in their workplaces and individual client work. Please contact us at customerservice@jictimages.com to learn how we can enhance your work and play with others.

Thanks to Gordon Bartage from Shreveport, LA, one of the students, who captured us holding the image that captured what each of us felt was most expressive of who we were.

Presence

I’ve been noticing how distracted (my assessment) so many folks are by cell phones, Ipods and other communication devices. Isn’t it interesting that these devices are purposed for communication and yet, in many ways they inhibit connection. This image speaks to me about how the devices that are intended to connect us in many ways “wall us off”.

Have you been out to lunch with a friend or colleague whose smart phone is on the table and one eye (if not both) constantly on the screen? All of a sudden it lights up and s/he either quickly hits ignore or offers an excuse to take the call? It makes me wonder whether our time together or the caller or email author take priority.

How about the times when you are at a meeting and at least half the attendees focus is directed toward their lap. While texting is quick and efficient and makes connections, at times it interferes with connections. On a scale of 1-10, how fully engaged in the topic at hand can you be while texting a reply or responding to an email?

Being fully present to me means the person in your presence is the focus … not someone at the office or at home or across the world. And, I recognize that there are times when our devices quickly connect us to emergencies, etc.

So I ask you, what bars are blocking your connections? I have a concern that folks will lack connection while communicating. I am really interested to hear your thoughts.
We invite you to share your creative ideas...guided by your intuition...leading to transformation in the use of images with groups and individuals.
